Long Link or Zig Fishing

This style of fishing is still new to me. I could only ever get my head around presenting a long link with bait on the surface. It seemed a decent way of presenting static floater baits, and it is. The fish that have seen all forms of controller set-ups in the past can fall for this tactic every time. It’s only advisable to set one up in shallow enough water. I wouldn’t fish a long link to the surface in 15ft of water because you’ll struggle to cast for a start. More importantly you’ll never be able to net your own fish and risk losing a fish at the net. I’ve got some ideas for an adjustable long link rig that I’ll play with when I’m on a deep lake sometime in the future. For now I’ll run you quickly through my standard set up. It’s pretty much the same as my controller set up with a small running lead instead of a float. You’ll need a rough idea of the depth of water your fishing, so you can set your hook link depth accordingly. I usually start a foot under the surface and work my way down foot by foot unless the fish are visually taking bits off the top. Then ill set it so I can see my bait on the surface. Hook baits wise I’ve done well on bits of foam, cork balls and pop ups. There are no real rules with this type of fishing. Like I say I’m still trying to suss it out for myself. All I can say on this is don’t neglect it. I’ve been having my first proper go on it this spring and so far have landed a few fish to over 36lb. Food for thought I think!
