Asian Carp

Did you know there are four types of Asian Carp the Grass Carp?
Ctenopharyngodon Idella, Big Head Carp Hypophtalmichthys Noblis, Silver Carp Hypophtalmichthys Molitrix and the Black carp.

I will start with the Grass Carp, these fish came over from Asia in1963 to control aquatic plants in aquaculterponds. These fish found their way into the Mississippi river near Illinois in the early 70's.
The stocking of Grass Carp was legalized in the early 80's in the State of Oklahoma for aquatic plant control. These fish interfered with the lakes other inhabitants that relied on the plants for cover especially from predators.

The Big Head Carp came from main rivers of East China and were bought to the US in the early 70's,In the early 80's they turned up all over the Mississippi river and they had been reproducing freely, they have also been found in the Neosho River the Kianichi River and the Red River, these fish consume large amounts of Blue-Green Algae, insect larvae and plankton. When disturbed these fish will jump between 3 and 4 feet out of the water.
The Silver Carp has pretty much the same back ground as the Big Head Carp so I will not repeat myself again, I will carry on with the next fish.
I will finish with the Black Carp, which was first bought to the US at the start of the 70's and more fish were introduced in the early 80's but used for human consumption and to control the Tremotode parasite found on farmed Catfish, It resembles the Grass Carp in appearance.

The Black Carp my Lopharynodon Piceus is found in most lakes in Eastern Asia.
I will get some photos in the near future.
