The biggest Grass Carp I came across was over in Bulgaria back in the early 90's.
Around 9 other carp anglers and I went on an expedition to a lake Chevran Bulgaria for 7 days the place was virgin water, apart from Andy Little doing some filming there catching large Silver Carp.
When we arrived at the lake it was about 30 to 40 Acers in size reed and grass fringed and a dam at one end this was very high up from the water about 20 feet so anything basking in the sun in that area could be seen.
The one-day it was really hot so me and my good mate Nick Bagnall made our way along to the dam wall, the sight of these Silver Carp was unbelievable these fish must have been between 4 and 6 feet in length. They looked like Grass Carp but they seemed too big for Grass Carp and we kept seeing flecks of silver in the sunlight.
We went back to our bivvies to consider how to catch these large beasts; I was shaking with adrenalin. We opted for 12ft 3lb T.C 20lb big game main line and 15lb double strength hook link with a 20ml bright yellow popup and a large controller, The fish weren’t spooked by casting and they wouldn’t take the bait either.
These fish weren’t Grass Carp they were Silver Carp that fed on plankton and other microorganisms, so we had no chance, the next day one of the London lads had a run and after over an hour scrapping with the fish he ended up with a Grass Carp of 44 ½ lb, what a beautiful fish.
I will try to get a photo of this for my website.
