Carp fishing in Wales
Wales is one of the most picturesque parts of the British Isles, it’s a shame there is not more Carp fishing there.
I fished in Wales quite a bit but that was at least 20 years ago and mostly for Trout apart from Carp fishing the lake at Llandrindod Wells. The lake itself is situated near the town of Llandrindod Wells so if you get to the junction where the A44 and the A483 meet the town and lake is about 3 miles south and is well signposted from the town.
This Welsh lake was very popular back in the 80s with many Carp anglers from all over England coming to fish its waters. I myself had a piece of the good Carp fishing the lake had to offer when the place had first kicked off so the Carp were very easy to catch. I can remember my old man taking me there; we spent 4 days at the lake back in the summer of 84.
I had done a bit of research on the lake previously and found out the peanut boom had hit the lake the Carp were going mental for them, so it was off to the particle farm to get loaded up with American jumbo peanuts these were a lot bigger than the normal run of the mill nut soaked them for 24 hours then boiled them for an hour this process is vital if you don’t do this you could kill the Carp..JPG)
We arrived at the lake one August early morning, I was surprised to see how many fish were showing themselves i.e. crashing, bubbling and surface feeding they were mainly around the island on the road bank. With not many anglers on the lake I had good choice of swims so I fished on the road bank baiting two areas towards the island and leaving them for a while to get the Carp feeding confidently and picked up a few low doubles on floaters.
A few hours had gone by I had forgotten the baited areas they were just a mass of bubbles, I automatically cast my bottom baits on to the baited spots and it was non stop action throughout the next 4 days catching over 50 Carp from 8lbs to 17lbs it was too easy and I got bored, there was no challenge so I never went back again.
The lake itself is around 15 acres with an average depth of 4 to 6 feet with some deeper areas to 9 feet around the island, which is snaggy and would be good for winter fishing.
